Is around here. Wife got a new job... she is an RN that got a job teaching Health Careers at the Career Center 2 miles from our home. She will be pd. year round but gets summer off, a week for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, a week at spring break and pretty much all major holidays. She is in the Teacher's Union (if ya can't beat em, join em) and pays zero premium and zero deductable for some nice insurance for us. I have lived one mile from the small hospital I do most my work for the past decade but never could swing a FT dayshift job until last week. Since I don't need their benefits (which suck) we agreed on a very nice per diem wage and a couple benefits like holiday pay and overtime for > 40 hrs/wk. Anyway, time off won't be nearly the same but I should be able to buy even more toys! I have 11 guitars, 10 amps and a nice PA now....so I'll probably just be trading up to better quality on a couple items. Maybe try an Axe/fx. Gonna be hard for me to get used to working for someone else full time. Last time I did that was in the 90's. Hoping the job opportunities are looking up in your areas. No big improvement here, really. Just lucky. The wife's position had someone in it for 20 years that just retired and they searched her out for it. And I just got lucky, because I wouldn't work other shifts and though a day job never opens up there...the gal's husband got a high powered job around Chicago and thus they are moving.

Congrats Boogie. I hope now that you are working full time days that you'll still find time to post on here. I'm not sure about the job market around here in the Baltimore/Washington area. My next door neighbor's home is on sale due to foreclosure though. Not an encouraging thing, but I feel like things are going to be ok.
Anyway glad to hear about your blessing from above. No I don't just say that to new parents . For me, there's no such thing as luck or good fortune.

home every day by 3:30, Jeff. I'll still be around. May cramp my ability to stay out late playing guitar..but I'm sure to find plenty of time for that. Regarding good fortune...as long as I acknowledge where it came from and that it isn't just happenstance, ...I can still buy into it. For me, the guy upstairs (spelled GOD for those that need help)is responsible... but he made me make good choices by cultivating relationships with this facility and mgmt. over a decade and ensuring I represented myself professionally. They knew that when they need me and scheduled dates for me to work that I would be there every time, on time and get the job done. So though I give him the credit, I credit myself with making some good choices, working to maintain relationships and being persistent enough to end up with something I wanted. The job and pay are good but I really love that it takes me about a minute to get there or home. Things ARE going to be ok, Cyclotron. I do feel for those in transition and dealing with loss, but the spirit of enterprise is still alive and I'm confident America still has some blessed days ahead. |

I know that my business is picking up. The airlines are packed this summer. If you're trying to travel, don't wait til the last second, you won't find a seat.
All the airlines reported their income for the last quarter over the last week and every single one of them made a profit.

Funny you should mention it Buc. It's 4 AM and I'm leaving for Dulles at 5:30 to pick up my family. They spent a week in CA with relatives, and yes the plane there was packed. I wish they had straight thru flights out of BWI, it's so much easier to get to than Dulles from here. My wife never books anything but direct flights.

Wish I had your optimism. I think I hear Nero tuning up! Of course it might take a while for the fall so you won't see me carrying any "The End Is Nigh" signs.

| I don't feel the overall economy is actually picking up....I think it will be a long hard year even if we get lucky enough to add some gridlock in Congress this Nov. Though my personal situation has gone from rosey to golden...I know my family members and friends are still having a tough time and there isn't a lot of good things showing in the near horizon. Still, I continue to be an optimist....shining city on a hill and all that... |

I've been very lucky and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that my luck continues. Lots of my musician bretheren are hurting now and more than a few of them are at least as accomplished as I am; some of them are actually much better. It's not my looks or my winning personality that has kept the work coming in; all I can attribute it to is dumb luck. I just hope it holds out. And I hope things vastly improve for everybody else.

I'll bet that your winning personality actually does have a lot to do with it. Glad to hear you have been staying plenty busy. I just heard from my brother in Missouri and he and his son both just got work the other day. Labor type work but that is what they are qualified for. I take it as a small sign of continued improvement. Hope it spreads like wildfire. |

I agree with Boogie. Don't discount the ability to work and play well with others. Guitar Player has been running some Steve Lukather stories about studio work and it sounds like something that helped him early on was the fact that he was a good guy which sounds like it might be uncommon in what sounds like a very cut-throat environment.
My wife actually got a job a couple of months ago. It was suppose to be only two days a week at a local PetSmart. They've had her work at least four days every week since she started. And her job is to receive in product and restock shelves. They must be moving some product out the door.

Well, thanks for the vote of confidence, guys! I know there's some truth to that. I've known several very talented musicians who have burned their bridges in this town by having a bad attitude or being unreliable. Thankfully, I learned a long time ago (and before it was too late) how important it is to show up on time, play what's appropriate for the music at hand and to keep my mouth shut about any musical or personal problems I might have with other members of a band. If it's not MY band, other people's shortcomings aren't really my business and if it's unbearable to me, I need to just quietly depart and move on. I'm the only original member left of the band I've been playing with every Thursday night for the past 8 years besides the bandleader/drummer. I mentioned that to him about 2 weeks ago and he said, "Yeah... and it's not just because you're a great player; it's your attitude too." So okay, I'll take credit when I've earned it.
But I'll tell you, hooking up with the Dan Band was a real lucky break for me, regardless of my good attitude or musical competency. The band's volume of work has consistently increased for the past few years while I've watched the wedding/corporate party band scene (which I'm still involved with) gradually erode. Many of those bands were put out of commission by today's economic climate. The one I work with has stayed afloat, but their volume of work is significantly down from where it was a couple of years ago. If it wasn't for the Dan Band, I'd have to figure out some kind of way to supplement my income, whether by teaching or finding some sort of non-music related work.
So yes... I'm a decent player with a professional attitude, but I'm also just a lucky so-and-so. And I frequently remind myself to never forget that fact.

To a certain extent, you make your own luck.
To much more of an extent, you can avoid putting yourself in a situation to be unlucky.
A simple example: The fewer people who think that you're an *******, the luckier you will end up being.
I'm not surprised you're doing good Ernie. Hope your "luck" continues.
However, if your level of work decreases, do us all a favor, take your free time, write some stuff and record a new CD.

made a little over a hundred bucks today doing a garage sale. Just needed to clear out some stuff and make a little space. Will do the same tomorrow and the leftover goes to GoodWill. I am amazed that it seems the only time people feel free to drive in my grass is when they are perusing my wares trying to find a deal for a dime. No one would normally drive up in my yard without permission (most people would stay on the circle drive or park in front of one of the garages)but I guess if you plan to buy a pr. of Levi's for 50 cents or a dime knick knack..it is ok. To top it off the pool was nice and clean and it was getting pretty hot...I was looking forward to a dip but got busy helping with the sale and didn't notice the wind picking up until I discovered the pool just covered with more leaves than I've seen in it all season. Yup, time for another disapproving face! |
