Now that the free Version 2 software for PODxt lets you add Model Packs with additional amps and effects, there are even more possibilities than before. This time I'm going to focus on sounds that will give you some options in regard to Octaves. Probably the most familiar is the Octavia pedal that Jimi Hendrix used for some solos. But there are lots of other possibilities as well.

For the purposes of these examples, I'll be using a PODxt version 2, a Vetta II HD and a Bass PODxt. And you HD 147 folks will also be able to use the PODxt Octone example, since that's an Amp Model that you have, too. I'm showing the settings using the latest Line 6 Edit software (version 2.02). I've also included MP3's, so you can hear the references below. The audio samples were played on Line 6 Variax 500, a custom Fender Tele Special and a Dean bass guitar. All of the patches for this article are posted at end of it.

In this first example, I'm using the Variax Spank (Stratocaster) model on pickup position 3 (middle pickup). This tone uses the PODxt version 2. The amp model is the Line 6 Octone from the Metal Shop pack, using the 4x12 Treadplate cabinet. I added the Jet Flanger for the MP3, to accentuate the octave effect just a bit. Without the Jet Flanger, it will give you more of a linear tone. You can take on some of the tonal qualities with this effect, that you'd get using a Digitech Whammy Pedal. All the post EQ settings are: Band 1=11.6db at 105hz, Band2=7.4db at 500hz, Band 3=2.2db at 3.9Khz, Band 4= -1.8db at 8.10Khz.

In this example, I'm using the Variax Spank (Stratocaster) model on pickup position 3 (middle pickup). This tone uses the PODxt version 2. The amp model is the Line 6 Lunatic using the 4x12 Treadplate cabinet. The secret octave ingredient here is the Saturn 5 Ring Modulator in the FX pack. It's like adding a nasty fat analog synth tone underneath your guitar tone. I added a bit of Sine Chorus to accentuate the octave effect just a bit. All the post EQ settings are: Band 1=3.6db at 85hz, Band2=2.8db at 600hz, Band 3= -3.6db at 4Khz, Band 4= -0.8db at 8.60Khz.

On this example, I'm using the Variax Spank (Stratocaster) model on pickup position 5 (bridge pickup). This tone uses the PODxt version 2. The amp model is the Plexi Lead 100 using the 4x12 Green 25's cabinet. This tone uses one of the synth patches in the FX pack called Seismik Synth. This is a great tone to spice up your heavy funk guitar tone. All the post EQ settings are: Band 1=7.2db at 105hz, Band2= -0.4db at 600hz, Band 3=2.2db at 4Khz, Band 4= -1.8db at 7.20Khz.

For this example, I'm using a '95 Fender Telecaster Special on the bridge pickup which is a Seymour Duncan Little '59. This tone uses the Vetta II HD utilizing the AES/EBU digital output. The amp models are the Brit Plexi Jumped Lead and the Brit Gain Silver J using the 4x12 Green 25's cabinet. This tone uses the Pitch Shifter effect. The nice thing about this particular tone is that it works very well with chords as well as single notes. Many times these effects only work well playing single notes and sometimes within a certain note range on the guitar. The Pitch Shifter settings are: Coarse 1= -12 semi, Fine 1= -40 cents, Coarse 2= 0 semi, Fine 2=10 cents, Mix=70%.

In this example, I'm using a '95 Fender Telecaster Special on the bridge pickup which is a Seymour Duncan Little '59. This tone uses the Vetta II HD utilizing the AES/EBU digital output. The amp models are the Brit Plexi Jumped Lead and the Brit Gain Silver J using the 4x12 Green 25's cabinet. This tone uses the Octave Fuzz effect modeled on the Octavia. It not only gives you an octave effect, but really dirty's up the sound, as well as contorting it. It's pretty rude and in your face. It basically screams Rock n'Roll lead. The Octave Fuzz settings are: Gain 28%, Drive 65%, Bass 50%, Mid 59%, Treble 55%.

In this last example, I'm using a Dean Bass guitar using a Bass PODxt, utilizing the amp only 1/4" output. The amp model is the Rock Classic (think SVT) the 8x10 Classic cabinet. This tone uses the Sub Octaves stomp effect. You can take your Bass part and turn it more into a lead part using this effect. All the post EQ settings are: Band 1=0db at 112hz, Band2=0db at 112hz, Band 3=3db at 250hz, Band 4=0db at 680hz, Band 5=0db at 4Khz, Band 6=0db at 2.19Khz.

The first two licks on this MP3 are the tone without the effect, the effect is turned on and the remaining lines demonstrate the sound.

Even if you're not a serious effects junkie like myself, give these a try and maybe they will expand your arsenal of tones. I found that once I started twisting knobs it was hard to stop playing with these effects. With just the slightest tweak the tone changes dramatically. So dig in and have some fun!

The patches for the sound bites and graphics in this article are below. The PODxt version 2, Vetta II and Bass PODxt files can be loaded into the Line 6 Edit software.
